A cidade é Baltimore, o ano é 1962 e Tracy Turnblad, uma grande garota com um grande penteado e um coração maior ainda tem duas paixões na vida: a dança e o The Corny Collins Show, um programa musical da televisão que é a verdadeira sensação do momento. Mesmo sendo um tanto gordinha para os padrões locais, ela prova o seu talento e conquista uma vaga fixa de dançarina no programa. Tracy torna-se uma celebridade do dia para noite. A rivalidade entre as duas fica ainda mais acirrada quando elas decidem disputar o mesmo garoto. Tracy ainda vai parar na cadeia ao incentivar uma manifestação contra a segregação racial, seu pai tem de hipotecar a loja da família e sua mãe, deprimida, está desistindo de viver.
